Spine Treatments

Covenant HealthCare is the regional leader in treatment for spinal disorders and back pain. Our extraordinary treatment services include the following:

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion
During this spinal surgery, a neurosurgeon implants a new biodegradable medical plate instead of using a metal, titanium plate. The new plate, called Mystique, dissolves in the body over a period of one to three years while providing support and strength needed for spinal disc fusion to occur. It acts much like dissolvable sutures.

Cervical Artificial Disc Surgery
Surgeons can replace cervical (neck) vertebrae with artificial discs that may give patients pain relief and better mobility. Discs are located between each vertebra in the spine, designed to absorb pressure and keep the spine flexible. Fluid inside the discs serves as a shock absorber, but injury and disease can cause the discs to lose water and shrink. This compresses nerves, leading to pain. This new surgery replaces the old disc with an artificial disc consisting of titanium ceramic plates with a ball and trough design that replicates normal motion.

Disc Arthroplasty
Disc arthroplasty, also referred to as lumbar artificial disc replacement, is a procedure that can eliminate lower back pain caused by degenerative disc disease. Similar to a hip or knee replacement, disc arthroplasty replaces damaged discs in the lower back with artificial discs. The CHARITE artificial disc is made of two metal plates and plastic ball.

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive spinal surgery procedure used to treat painful fractures in the spine caused by osteoporosis. During the procedure, a surgeon inserts a balloon to restore the bone height and shape. Cement is then inserted to strengthen the area. Kyphoplasty can help prevent additional fractures in the spine by keeping the spine lined up in its upright position.

Lumbar Epidural Injection
A lumbar epidural injection places anti-inflammatory medicine into the epidural space to decrease inflammation of the nerve roots. This procedure is used to reduce pain in the back or legs. It may provide permanent relief or provide a period of pain relief for several months while the injury or cause of pain heals.
