Mary Free Bed at Covenant

Mary Free Bed at Covenant, a joint venture of Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital and Covenant HealthCare, provides customized inpatient rehabilitation for people with a wide range of disabling diagnoses, such as amputation, brain injury, spinal cord injury and stroke.

Your Inpatient Rehabilitation Experience
Rehabilitation takes dedication and hard work. The effort you make now will reap greater rewards later. Research shows the sooner you begin vigorous rehabilitation, the better your outcome will be.

Your interdisciplinary team is led by a physician specializing in rehabilitation. He or she works with you to develop an individualized rehabilitation plan based on your needs and goals. Other team members may include:

  • Rehabilitation nurses
  • Therapists (physical, occupational and recreational)
  • Speech-language pathologists
  • Social workers and nursing care managers
  • Psychologists and registered dietitians also are available depending on your needs

You’ll take part in at least three hours of therapy, five or more days a week, targeting strength, balance, motor skills and if needed based on diagnoses, cognition and communication.

Therapy will occur in your room or in our specially designed gym. We also have an apartment where you may practice everyday skills such as bathing, dressing, cooking and doing laundry, before you head home.

Your participation in each therapy is critical to your recovery. We know you’re determined, and your team will help guide you. Loved ones are welcome and encouraged to engage in your therapy sessions, especially those who will help when you get home. We consider family to be part of your rehabilitation team.

Our inpatient rehabilitation program is housed in a 20,000-square-foot facility with 41 beds (five private, 36 semi-private). A large therapy gym features state-of-the-art technology, including the Lokomat robot-assisted walking technology, and NeuroCom balance system.

Other features include:

  • Social areas to enjoy with visitors.
  • Washers and dryers available to you or your family to wash your clothes, including detergent.
  • Healthy food options for family members and visitors, offered in the hospital’s cafeteria.
  • Lodging for out-of-town family, available at the nearby McNally House; call 989.583.0155 for more information on accommodations.

Our program is certified by the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP). We also are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) as a Comprehensive Integrated Inpatient Program for Children, Adolescents and Adults; Brain Injury Specialty Program; and Stroke Specialty Program.
