Let's Get Back at It

Led by Dr. Kevin Orloski and a team of therapists, the Outpatient Spine Clinic at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation at Covenant is dedicated to helping people of all ages manage spine and joint pain without surgery. The goal is restoring spinal and musculoskeletal health through rehabilitation.

At the heart of it all are great relationships built on great communication, says Emily DeFoux, medical group operations manager at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation. “The goal is understanding YOU, your pain, exploring a number of treatment options, and then developing a plan to get you back to enjoying life and the activities you love.”

Each person is different, she explains, whether weekend warrior, elite athlete, grandparent, or working mom. So is each person’s pain.

That’s why Outpatient Spine Clinic patients are evaluated by a physician and therapist at the first appointment so both can hear straight from the patient. There is a lot of listening going on during this time. Bonus! Patients will not have to re-explain their pain problems multiple times to multiple providers.

Then, together providers and patients talk about one-stop options for their individualized treatment plan, including:

  • Brace fabrication and fitting on site
  • Electrodiagnostics to test nerve and muscle function
  • Functional capacity assessment
  • Physical therapy evaluation and treatment, including the McKenzie Method®
  • Return-to-work therapy
  • Referral to a highly recommended specialist, when appropriate
  • Pain injections

The McKenzie Method is a special approach to spine care. Therapists at the Mary Free Bed at Covenant complete a three-part certification process beyond the scope of their traditional training to offer this.

Patients are re-evaluated after 4-6 visits – which is not the usual outpatient rehabilitation protocol, DeFoux explains. “We don’t want to ‘burn through’ anyone’s rehab visits if we aren’t seeing results.” Here again, great relationships and communications come into play. “The physician and therapist are right there together consulting on how to move on to next steps to achieve required results while saving patients time and money,” she says.

Best of all, the Outpatient Spine Program at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation at Covenant is accessible. Referrals are not necessary unless required by insurance. Even then, make an appointment with confidence, knowing the program’s office staff will do the legwork of getting that referral for you from your primary care provider.

If you have acute or chronic back or joint pain or an athletic injury, don’t suffer. Reach out for more information or schedule an appointment by calling 989.583.2720
