Patients in the Great Lakes Bay Region now have access to an innovative breast cancer surgery option close to home. Recently, Dr. Sussan Bays, Medical Director for the Covenant Cancer Care Center and Covenant Breast Health Center, performed the first endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy (E-NSM) in the state of Michigan, expanding access to advanced breast cancer care for patients throughout the region.
Dr. Sussan Bays performs E-NSM in the state of MichiganOffered through the Covenant Cancer Care Center, endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy is a minimally invasive surgical approach that removes breast tissue while preserving the nipple, areola, and skin. Using a small camera and specialized surgical instruments, the procedure is performed endoscopically through smaller incisions, often hidden near the underarm area, rather than the larger incision typically required with traditional nipple-sparing mastectomy.
For eligible patients, the technique may offer several benefits, including less visible scarring, improved cosmetic outcomes, and enhanced surgical visualization. When appropriate, the procedure can be combined with immediate breast reconstruction, helping patients achieve a more natural appearance following surgery.
The procedure was completed through a collaborative approach between breast and plastic surgery. For this milestone case, Dr. George Malliaras, Plastic Surgeon at Covenant HealthCare, performed the immediate breast reconstruction after the mastectomy.
