Medical Moments: Heart Technology for Stroke Prevention

Covenant heart experts shared information on heart disease and related illnesses in honor of #HeartMonth in February. Last week, Dr. Bashar Al Jayyousi, Cardiologist with Covenant Cardiology, discussed a technology that can help prevent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation or a-fib.

To lower risk for stroke, a device is permanently implanted to close the left atrial appendage (LAA), which is the source for a large majority of stroke-causing blood clots in people with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. The Watchman device helps to prevent the migration of blood clots from the LAA, which will reduce the patient’s risk of stroke.
