Having a baby is a pretty extraordinary experience. Having one at Covenant is knowing that you and your baby are receiving the most preferred women’s and children’s care in the region.

And it all starts at The Birth Center, where home-like amenities and the reassurance provided by an on-site neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) make Covenant a safety stand-out.

In addition to a beautiful place like The Birth Center, Covenant offers moms and babies some extraordinary people who are champions on your behalf. Among them is Nicole Brookman, Covenant’s Women’s and Children’s Outreach Coordinator. For expectant parents…this is your “person.”

Brookman is a nurse education specialist who acts as a liaison between the hospital and the community as it pertains to women and childbirth:

• Leading classes to educate expectant parents about labor and delivery, breastfeeding, baby care, raising multiples, and having a C-section.
• Answering phone calls from new parents and offering reassurance.
• Reaching out to the community at events.
• Working with area physicians to provide comprehensive online resources as well as “binders” to prepare pregnant patients for childbirth and baby care.
• Teaching friends and family CPR and first-aid classes.

“We’re here for parents before AND after childbirth,” Brookman explains. “It is extremely common for people to take childbirth education classes, then have tons of questions once the baby is born and home. We welcome those questions and are here for new parents.”

Brookman started her career at Covenant more than a decade ago as a medical pulmonary registered nurse. She then worked in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and was part of the transport team that accompanies premature babies sent to Covenant’s NICU from as many as 18 Michigan counties.

Her passion for education led her to Covenant’s Central Nursing Education Department, where she trained colleagues in new procedures and basic and advanced skill development.

Now as women’s and children’s outreach coordinator, Brookman is fired up about the potential of harnessing her love of the NICU with her interest in teaching to help Covenant’s youngest patients and their families navigate the early weeks and months of life.
