Just over 12 years after the first da Vinci® Surgical System arrived at Covenant HealthCare, the surgical team has now completed more than 10,000 robotic-assisted surgeries.

The da Vinci® Surgical System integrates robotics and sophisticated computer technology with the skills of the surgeon. The system enhances a surgeon's ability to perform delicate operations with great precision and maneuverability, while only requiring tiny incisions. This in turn leads to smaller wounds, quicker healing and shorter hospital stays for patients.

The team of 28 robotic surgeons at the Covenant Center for Advanced Robotic Surgery have more than 220 combined years of experience.

“This accomplishment would not have been possible without the extraordinary dedication of the entire surgery team at Covenant,” says Dr. Sujal Patel, Robotic Surgeon and Trauma Medical Director for Covenant. “The commitment from administration to have the foresight to grow the program and the buy in from the staff that work in the operating room to get the appropriate training has enabled us to improve the surgical experience for thousands of patients.”

With three da Vinci® X, one da Vinci® Xi, and two Mako robots, Covenant continues to lead robotic surgery in the Great Lakes Bay Region with more than 1,300 robotic procedures completed annually.

“More than 70% of soft tissue surgeries conducted at Covenant are done robotically. The amount of coordination and collaboration it takes to accomplish this is exceptional with three da Vinci ® Systems,” explains Aimie Goodrow, Director of Surgical Services. “We are a Robotic Center of Excellence thanks to every team member’s commitment to continuously promoting consistency in patient safety and timely access to care.”

The array of procedures surgeons can now perform robotically at Covenant is still growing more than a decade later. The current roster of robotic offerings includes general surgery, colorectal, endocrinology, gynecological oncology, gynecology, hepatobiliary, liver, pancreatic, surgical oncology, urology, and thoracic.
