Patient Gary in Physical Therapy

GARY'S STORY

Gary was the picture of health, actively maintaining his farm and making maple syrup. “I went from being a perfectly healthy guy… to someone who could not function.” He lost his appetite, was extremely fatigued, then immobile. Gary was taken to the hospital the day after his 63rd birthday; his body temperature was inconsistent, and he was shaking. “I remember them unloading me in Onaway.” After that, there is little he remembers from Nov. 4 to Dec. 22, 2019.

A spinal tap confirmed Gary had West Nile virus, a neuroinvasive disease. From Petoskey, Gary was transferred to Grand Rapids, first to Spectrum Health and then Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, where he regained consciousness three days later. After the Mary Free Bed inpatient team helped him regain mobility, Gary was sent home to continue his rehabilitation with the Mary Free Bed at Covenant team in Saginaw. There, Gary completed his therapy and regained his active lifestyle.

“We had been told to plan on him needing six to nine months of around-the-clock care after his rehabilitation stay,” said his daughter, Misty Shepherd. Misty noted that the continuum of care provided both in Grand Rapids and in Saginaw at Mary Free Bed at Covenant truly transformed her Dad. “His recovery has been nothing short of amazing. We are truly thankful for all the hospital and rehabilitation staff that were part of his journey.” Gary acknowledges “it’s nothing short of a miracle, but there have been a lot of people helping me pull that miracle off.”

MARY FREE BED'S story begins in 1891 when a small group of Grand Rapids women recognized the need for medical care by patients with limited financial means. They launched a fundraising campaign asking anyone named Mary – or anyone who knew someone named Mary – to donate ten cents. Because Mary was the most popular female name at the time, the group soon raised enough money to endow a bed at a local hospital, which became known as the Mary “free bed.”

Today, Mary Free Bed provides the most comprehensive rehabilitation services in Michigan and is nationally recognized for achieving excellent outcomes for children and adults who have experienced amputations, brain injuries, cancer, multiple traumas, spinal cord injuries, strokes and many other diagnoses.
