John's Story

Lost 183 pounds
Before: 333 pounds; Now: 150 pounds

When I was younger, I weighed between 120 to 130 pounds but as I got older my weight went up and up. I had tried dieting and exercise to lose the extra weight but it always came back, plus more. I liked to hunt and fish but continually found myself getting “winded” from walking and carrying my gear, and I would find excuses to get out of doing yardwork. My life became a cycle of wake up, go to work, go home, fall asleep in my chair until supper, and then off to bed. Soon my health started to decline, and I would fall asleep anytime I would sit down.

After some testing, I found out I had sleep apnea and needed to use a C-PAP machine. I also had high cholesterol and high blood pressure, both of which required medications. My mother and my brother died from complications of diabetes and still the wake-up call never hit. Finally the “last straw” happened when I went for tests for my heart and the x-ray showed a mass in my chest. I was scared that I wouldn’t be around to see my kids and grandkids grow up. More testing showed the mass to be a fat pad and my doctor suggested I have bariatric surgery. I attended an information meeting and after I met the doctor and the staff, I decided to have the gastric bypass.

I lost over 150 pounds that first year after my surgery and I got my life back. Now I exercise regularly, ride a bike, and play with my grandsons. I listen when my body tells me I am not eating right and even though I still occasionally battle my old habits, now I win. These days the only medications I take are vitamins. It hasn’t always been easy, but my life is healthier, happier, and more rewarding. I have been asked if I would go through surgery again. “In a heartbeat!!!”
