For many surgeons worldwide and right here at Covenant HealthCare, the da Vinci® Surgical System is routinely used to treat prostate cancer and other urologic conditions. In fact, roughly three out of four prostate cancer surgeries in the United States today are performed using da Vinci® Surgery, a minimally invasive, robot-assisted procedure to remove the cancerous prostate.

At Covenant, 208 urologic surgeries have been performed using the da Vinci® robot it was purchased three years ago. Many were for prostate cancer -- the second leading cause of cancer death in U.S. men.

What the da Vinci Si HD offers

It gives surgeons enhance vision, precision, dexterity and control, while offering patients many potential benefits such as:

* Excellent cancer control
* Faster return of sexual function
* Faster return of urinary continence
* Shorter hospital stay
* Low level of pain
* Less blood loss, fewer transfusions
* Lower risk of infection and complications
* Faster recovery and return to normal activities

Men facing prostate cancer are often given the treatment options of watchful waiting, hormone therapy, radiation, or surgery to remove the cancerous prostate (radical prostatectomy). Some recent studies found that when comparing surgical removal of the prostate to radiation, surgery had the lowest cancer death rate.

State-of-the-art da Vinci® Surgery enables your doctor to operate through a few tiny incisions allowing for a faster recovery.

But surgery with the da Vinci® doesn’t place a robot at the controls.

Your experienced and knowledgeable Covenant surgeon controls every aspect of the surgery with the assistance of the da Vinci® system; the da Vinci® merely replicates the surgeon’s movements. Seated just a few feet away, the surgeon looks into a 3D, high-definition screen and sees an actual image of the surgical field and then maneuvers miniature surgical instruments inserted into the patient through tiny incisions.

The da Vinci® is also used for patients facing other urologic surgeries because of its many potential benefits over traditional open surgery.
