Inpatient Care
Our pediatric rehabilitation specialists work with our tiniest patient sin the Covenant Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (RNICU), the only unit of its kind in the region. Many of the newborns in the RNICU require assessment to aid in the diagnosis of congenital conditions.
-
Physical and occupational therapists teach parents and caregivers handling and positioning techniques to improve and maintain baby's muscle tone, posture and range of motion.
-
Speech language pathologists are especially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of feeding and swallowing issues in infants. These problems often occur in premature infants whose brains and physiology have not matured enough to accomplish these highly coordinated skills.
-
All infants discharged from the RNICU are monitored through the Developmental Assessment Clinic. Therapists track their development to check for delays. If necessary, they will then be referred for Covenant outpatient rehabilitation services. Early intervention is key to successful development.
Children with severe illnesses or injuries who are being treated in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) will be assessed and treated by the Pediatric Rehabilitation Team. For children with less intense needs, rehabilitation services are also provided in our pediatrics unit.
Covenant is also one of only three CARF accredited (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) inpatient rain injury programs in the state of Michigan for adolescents (14 years old and above). Our approach to brain injury rehabilitation focuses on the recovery of functional skills and independent living capabilities which teens suffering from stroke, head injury and/or other neurological disorders may have lost.
