Glossary of Medical Specialties
The following medical specialties are represented by the medical staff of
Covenant HealthCare.
Allergy/Immunology - the
diagnosis and treatment of allergic and immunologic diseases, including asthma,
hay fever, hives, eczema, and drug and food allergies
Anesthesiology - the
administration of medications as a means to block pain or diminish consciousness
for surgery, usually by injection or inhalation
Cardiology - the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of
the heart and major blood vessels Critical Care Medicine - the specialty that
focuses on the most effective and efficient care possible for the critically
ill
Dermatology - the
diagnosis and medical/surgical treatment of all diseases and disorders of the
skin, hair and nails
Emergency Medicine - the specialty that includes treatment of any symptom, illness or
injury requiring urgent evaluation and/or treatment
Endocrinology - the diagnosis and
treatment of disorders of the endocrine glands (including the thyroid, adrenal
and pituitary glands), such as diabetes and hyperthyroidism
Family Practice - the specialty
that provides comprehensive and ongoing medical care to all members of the
family unit
Gastroenterology - the diagnosis and treatment of
diseases and disorders of the digestive system, including the liver, stomach and
intestines, and medical conditions such as ulcers, tumors and colitis
Geriatrics – the treatment of
diseases and internal disorders of the elderly
Hematology/Oncology - the diagnosis and treatment of
blood disorders and/or cancer
Infectious Diseases - the diagnosis and treatment of
communicable diseases, including hepatitis, meningitis, tuberculosis, Lyme
Disease and AIDS Internal Medicine - the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of
adult health problems
Neonatology - the specialized care and treatment of a
newborn up to six weeks of age
Nephrology - the diagnosis and treatment of kidney
diseases
Neurology - the
diagnosis and medical treatment of the nervous system and brain, including
conditions such as strokes and seizures
Neurosurgery - the specialty of diagnosis and surgical
treatment of disorders of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, neck and back
Obstetrics/Gynecology - the care
of women during and after pregnancy and childbirth, and the care of the female
reproductive system and treatment of associated disorders
Ophthalmology - the diagnosis and
treatment, including surgery, of diseases and disorders of the eye, such as
cataracts and glaucoma
Orthopaedics - the diagnosis and treatment, including
surgery, of diseases and disorders of the musculoskeletal system, including
bones, joints, tendons, ligaments, muscles and nerves
Otolaryngology - the medical and
surgical care for diseases of the ears, nose and throat (ENT)
Pain Management – the control of
pain or discomfort through medication, stress reduction, relaxation, exercise,
massage, heat, cold, or providing a comfortable environment
Pathology - the specialty of
physicians who are trained to examine surgical specimens and biopsies for
diagnostic purposes and who provide expertise in the performance and
interpretation of laboratory testing and blood banking
Pediatrics - the care and
treatment of infants, children and adolescents
Pediatric Surgery - the diagnosis and surgical treatment
of diseases, disorders and conditions of infants, children and
adolescents
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Physiatry) - the use of exercise, prosthetics, and
modalities such as heat, water and mild electrical current to maximize an
individual's level of ability to physically function, often employed following
illness or injury Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery - the repair, restoration
or improvement of conditions or injuries to the skin and external features
resulting from disease, injury or birth defects
Podiatry - the care and treatment of the foot and ankle
from childhood problems through those resulting from aging, including injury and
disease and surgical correction of bunions, hammertoes and other
conditions
Psychiatry -
the diagnosis and treatment of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders
Psychology – The science of
dealing with mental processes and their effects on behavior
Pulmonary Medicine - the
diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases and conditions of the
respiratory system, such as bronchitis, asthma, emphysema and occupational lung
disease
Radiology - the
use of radiation, ultrasound, X-rays, computerized tomography (CT), magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI), mammography and other imaging technologies to diagnose
diseases and internal disorders
Reproductive Endocrinology - the diagnosis and
management of infertility in women, including pregnancy loss, surgery and
preservation of the reproductive tract Rheumatology - the diagnosis and
treatment of diseases signaled by inflammation or pain in the muscles, joints or
connective tissues, such as arthritis
Surgery (General) - the surgical intervention for
diseases or conditions of the following systems: colon/rectal (large and small
intestines), endocrine (glandular system) and gastrointestinal (digestive,
liver, stomach, intestines)
Thoracic Surgery - surgery of the chest cavity,
including the lungs
Urology - the diagnosis and management, including
surgery, of disorders of the urinary tract in both males and females, as well as
the male reproductive system
Vascular Surgery - the diagnosis
and treatment of circulatory problems of the extremities, especially the legs
