Spasticity Management
Spasticity (muscles that are continually contracted) sometimes interfere with walking, movement, speech and overall quality of life. Covenant's spasticity management program works to help affected individuals ,minimize the effects associated with spasticity, therefore improving ability to complete daily tasks.
Symptoms of spasticity include:
- Impaired voluntary control of skeletal muscles
- Muscle spasms
- Clonus (a series of involuntary muscular contractions)
- Pain
- Hyperactive reflexes
Spasticity can affect a number of patients, including those suffering from:
- Traumatic brain injury
- Stroke
- Spinal cord injury
- Multiple sclerosis
- Cerebral palsy
- Anoxic insults
- Various other neurological conditions
Treatment for spasticity includes:
- ITBTM (intrathecal baclofen) therapy
- Oral medications
- Injection therapy (BOTOX® injection)
- Neurosurgeries (selective dorsal rhizotomy, which is a neurosurgical procedure that severs problematic nerve roots in the spinal cord, and deep brain stimulator)
- Orthopedic treatments (tenotomy, which involves a division of the tendon, and tendon-lengthening or transfers)
- Physical and/or occupational therapy, including weight-bearing activities, splints and neuron developmental treatment
