James E. Cartwright Care Center

When managing a terminal illness at home is not possible, the James E. Cartwright Care Center provides the next best option: a home away from home that offers 24-hour hospice care and compassion. Operated by Covenant VNA, this 15-bed facility is centrally located in Saginaw. Our goal is to provide quality of life and dignity during the last six months of a resident's illness, helping both the patient and family cope with many end-of-life issues- including physical, emotional, and spiritual.

The Cartwright environment is warm and comfortable, complete with private bedrooms, cable TV, telephone, and DVD player. Amenities also include guest rooms for family, a play room for children and a chapel for prayer and reflection. Residents are encouraged to personalize their room with photographs and momentos. The Cartwright staff is readily available to help with nutritious meals, bathing, dressing and custodial care.

Guided by the patient's physician, the Covenant VNA Hospice Team follows a care program tailored to each resident and family. Meanwhile, all care is managed by a registered nurse (RN), who is assisted by licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and home health aides in addition to social workers, chaplains and volunteers who visit frequently.

A Lasting Tribute of Love Memorial Walkway

The front walkway at Cartwright is lined with engraved brick memorials. The walkway starts at the primary center entrance, but over time it is expected to wrap around the building to a patio in back. Engraved memorial bricks are available in two different sizes -- 4" x 8" and 8" x 8". The 4" x 8" brick can display up to three lines and the 8" x 8" brick can display up to seven lines. Each line is between 11 and 17 characters each. The 4" x 8" bricks are $45 each and the larger bricks are $110 each. For a form to purchase a brick, email Kathy Roberts or call her at 989.583.3105.

Expert Hospice Services

People who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness and have a life expectancy of about six months or less qualify for hospice care. This can be provided at home if someone is there to help the patient. Otherwise, patients and their doctors should consider the Cartwright Care Center. The sooner we are contacted, the better we can manage the patient's needs according to a six-month hospice plan of care. Our team of hospice-certified nurses, physicians, social workers, pharmacists, counselors, chaplains, dietitians, therapists and volunteers offer the following services:
  • Professional on-call nursing care, 24 hours a day, seven days a week
  • Pain management and symptom control
  • Medication direction
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Physical, occupational and speech therapy
  • Medical equipment and supplies
  • Spiritual and bereavement support for patient and family members
  • Financial counseling
  • Respite care
  • Companionship, errands and personal care
