James E. Cartwright Care Center
When managing a terminal illness at home isn’t possible, the James E. Cartwright Care Center in Saginaw Township provides the next best option – a compassionate home away from home with 24-hour hospice care.
The Cartwright Care Center is a 15-bed residence operated by the Covenant Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) Hospice Team. Our goal is not to cure, but to provide quality of life and dignity during the last six months of a resident’s illness. We help the patient and family cope with many end-of-life issues – physical, emotional and spiritual.
Caring for Residents
At the Cartwright Care Center, resident comfort is our top priority. Residents have private rooms with their own phone, cable television and DVD player. Family and friends can visit at any time, and pets can also visit with prior approval.
Other amenities include guest suites for family visits, a playroom for children and a chapel for prayer and reflection. In addition, residents can expect three nutritionally balance meals each day, which can be served in the resident’s private room or in the Great Room, according to the resident’s preference.
Payment
At the Cartwright Care Center, there is a non-refundable deposit of $460 for the patient. After that, the fee is $115 per day. Families can also rent one of the family suites for $25 per night.
Hospice Services
Residents are treated like family, with respect and compassion. Guided by the patient’s physician, the Covenant VNA Hospice Team follows a care program tailored to each resident and family. Overall care is managed by a registered nurse (RN) case manager who is assisted by various members of the hospice team including:
- Experienced RN’s, licensed practical nurses (LPN’s) and nurse’s aides who provide medication management, prescribed treatments and assistance with meals, bathing and dressing.
- Social workers, chaplains and volunteers who provide spiritual counseling, bereavement support, financial counseling, respite care, companionship, errand services and more.
When to Call Cartwright
People who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness and have a life expectancy of about six months or less qualify for hospice care. This can be provided at home if someone else is there to help the patient. Otherwise, patients and their doctors should consider the Cartwright Care Center. The sooner we are contacted, the better we can manage the patient’s needs according to a six-month hospice plan of care.
Representatives from the Cartwright Care Center can personally meet with you to discuss the best hospice approach for you or your loved one.
